Kokeshi are Japanese dolls, usually handmade out of wood, with a simple trunk and enlarged head with fine features painted on. These wooden dolls date back to the early 19th century when woodworkers (kijiya) began making them to sell as toys and souvenirs. In Japan it is popular to collect Kokeshi dolls, as they are considered to be lucky charms.
